Keep
your eyes open and calendars free because singer, songwriter,
and producer, Chilton will soon become a household
name. He is a new and upcoming artist performing with his band TexBukSex at
local Atlanta clubs and other concerts throughout the country.
With a mix of funk, r &b, and rock, his music has woed the
hearts of fans internationally.
Talent has
spoken once again and has gotten the attention of fans from
the United States to Germany. Now living in Marietta,
GA, Chilton has created a masterpiece of acoustic sounds. His
music has a relaxing feel that keeps you wanting to hear more. This
brother has the voice and musical lyrics of a genius, and not
to mention ladies, very easy on the eyes.
Chilton has
toured with Speech (former member of Arrested Development)
and made appearances on BET and Late Show with Conan O’Brien;
that’s pretty impressive to start out, huh? Well, it
gets better. In 1999, he founded a website chiltonmusic.com and
in 2003, he founded Chiltonmusic.com Records, both
sites allowing him to release his music to the public and
purchase as well. Chilton’s CD is entitled, IS, with
the simple theme of love.
A.N: Where
are you from originally?
Chilton: I
am a military brat, so I never planted or developed roots. But
if I claim any two places as home, it would be Dallas,
TX (Go Cowboys) and Nashville, TN, home of the greatest
guitar players in the world.
A.N: What
brought you to the music industry?
Chilton: I
have always been touched by music. Even as a kid, I would write
songs. Of course, I didn’t know what I was doing at
the time, but I would hum and sing them all day long. My
parents were oblivious to this talent for quite some time, and
it was a shock to them when I decided to become a musician.
A.N: What musicians inspired you the
most?
Chilton: You
know, some play coy when asked this question, but I won’t
front. Prince is the reason I picked up a guitar in the first
place. Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Led Zeppelin,
U-2, Dr. Dre, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, Stevie
Ray Vaughn, and Funkadelic Parliament were other inspirations.
A.N: How
do you define yourself and your music?
Chilton: I
am a black man that makes music. My music is a celebration of our
entire history in America and beyond. I love all of our art
because when at its purest, it’s honest and free. Nothing
is as moving as a Negro spiritual because you can hear the desire
for respect and the pain of slavery in their notes. The Blues
is the most honest music ever created. Its strength is its
honesty. Jazz is more beautiful or complicated. Classical
is classical but what people don’t know is the creators of
jazz know the genre. Most jazz musicians still plays it today. Yet,
they created a sound so far beyond the normal classical note; they
gave it the jazz genre. Hip hop is a book still being written. When
we owned hip hop, it had the ability to change the world. It
still can but it’s going to have to get its SOUL back. For
the music which is born in the ghettos of America, it can grow
and become a dominate form of music.
A.N: What
source serves as your driving force?
Chilton: Just
an insane desire to create! I love creating things whether
it’s music, paintings, characters, or a short film or video. I
love spending my days creating.
A.N: Tell
me about your first CD.
Chilton: It’s
entitled, “IS”. I am very proud of it, but I was told ‘no’ by
every label that exists on the planet (remember I told you about
humility). I knew I have written a great piece of work that
if given the chance, would stand the test of time. I am not
trying to sound cocky, but I have the greatest band in the world. There
is no one like us on any stage anywhere. I am a very good
songwriter and producer, so I knew I had some monster jams on the
CD. Personally, it’s crazy if someone does not respond
to the songs, ‘4 A.M.’, 'Damn, I Should Have Loved
You’, 'I IS’, and ‘Ecstasy’. ‘Damn,
I Should Have Loved You’ is about a man who made the wrong
choice about loving a woman and been living with it for years.
When he sees her again, he feels like he should have loved her
then. ‘Ecstasy’ is about being blown away sexually
by a woman. ’I IS’ is a prayer to God. It’s
an admission of all my sins and failings, and I try to love Him
better. This CD is an opera about love in many phases.
A.N: What
is your favorite song?
Chilton: 4
A.M. is my favorite because it had me perplexed for so many years. It
took me 3 years to write it! It’s about waking up at 4am
and realizing the woman sleeping next to you, is not the woman
you want. It’s a sad feeling and heartbreaking song.
A.N: One
of my favorite songs is “What If I Told You”. What’s
the story behind the song?
Chilton: ‘What
if I Told You’ is a response to how society bases its value
for love on looks, materialism, selfishness, etc. It’s
saying I love you more than all of that. I love the line, “go
out and find a man with a nice car, and I could sleep with a thousand
whores but I would still be wishing on a star for your love”. At
the end of the day, love is stronger than your ego; that’s
why Hiliary never left Bill and vice versa. They love each
other and don’t want to be apart.
A.N: I
read that you have created your own website to release your
music. Why
did you choose to go the website route versus handing out CDs
like you see a lot of upcoming artists do? Has the website
been successful?
Chilton: I
still have the physical CDs; it’s just that you have to buy
it through my website which is completely secure by the way. I
have sold CDs all over the world and never had one security complaint.
I have a great international distributor who handles all of that.
I chose the internet because it gives me a chance to reach people
in ways that I can't otherwise. I am an independent artist,
so I can't buy a billboard in Times Square or pay to have my music
videos into rotation. Radio is a joke for an artist like me so
the online thing left was the internet.
Having my own website is just the greatest.
I get to meet new people
that loves my sound. While I have a black planet page and myspace
page, it’s great for people to come out and see me and the
band. Being an indie artist you have to judge success and failure
differently than the industry. I encourage all up and comers to
temper their expectations. You aren't going to sell 1,000 CDs in
one year on the internet, so get that out of your head. You do
well to use the website as a tool to promote yourself and if the
occasional sale comes along great.
As I said earlier, I am international
and sold CDs all over the world. I mean places I have never seen.
Like right now I am big in Germany some how, so yes I would say
it’s been successful.
A.N: What
are you working on now?
Chilton: My
next CD is just ridiculous!! I am really feeling it. I can't wait
to put that art out into the world. One thing I did was kissing
my ego goodbye and decided I would allow my band to flesh out more
of my song ideas. This was a weird thing for them at first
because I would come into rehearsals and say "What do you
guys think you can do with this riff", and they would sit
there and wait for me to reveal the whole song. I would literally
have to say to my drummer "I need you to create a drum beat
to this". They would look at me with wonderment in their
eyes.
It’s been a real learning experience
too because they guys are such fantastic musicians. I mean everyone
of them are masters of their respective instruments. For me to
say’ do your thing’ and its not just a live show but
rather a document of where they are right now. Well, it
means something to them and me.
A.N: What
are your future plans?
Chilton: Hopefully
a tour!! Anyone reading, this if you want an aggressive funk/R&B
band to literally burn down the house by all means holla at ya
boy!! You can get at me via my website www.chiltonmusic.com.
We want to play for you!! Other than that I just plan on creating,
creating, creating. end
