Stumbling across Young Black Professional gatherings in NYC is much like finding the perfect scarf in a vintage shop in the village-obscure and magical all at the same time. I arrived at Fashion 40- midtown on Friday @ 7pm with the same expectations, was surprised, but disappointed at the same time.
The mélange of people was great! DJ Elle was amazing; as usual; limiting the usual DJ interjections to a minimum and allowing the flow of the music to lend its natural vibe. Business cards and the bar’s signature Apple Martini’s (albeit overpriced apple martinis) were seen all over the place. I witnessed political debates, sports discussions, shoe compliments, hair critiques and advice. I love our people!!!
The only downside was the venue. Expensive, small, and a virtual tourist trap. After 10, I personally witnessed the bouncer charging people $20/admission and $30/front parking, which yields nothing but tickets from the cops-a total scam. It does become tough to get a drink and seating when the place gets busy but the wait staff is attentive and courteous. I prefer less touristy venues however, a chance encounter with the fabulous Young Black Professional crowd made it worth it.
